About Lepa Brena

Lepa Brena is a Yugoslav artist, singer, and entrepreneur—one of the most successful and best-selling music stars in the history of the Balkans. From the very beginning of her musical career, she quickly gained the status of one of the most prominent performers on the Yugoslav music scene. Together with the band Slatki Greh (“Sweet Sin”), she laid the foundations of a new musical genre by blending folk music with pop sounds. In 1982, they released their first album, Čačak, Čačak, and appeared in the film Tesna koža (“Tight Skin”), while their second album, Mile voli disko (“Mile Loves Disco”), sold nearly 800,000 copies. The album Bato, bato was released in 1984, and Lepa Brena became a symbol of a united Yugoslavia with her performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo. Over the next three years, with three new albums, she solidified her status as the most popular public figure in Yugoslavia. The 1987 film Hajde da se volimo (“Let’s Fall in Love”), in which Lepa Brena played the lead role, was accompanied by an album of the same name. This project set new standards in Yugoslav music by merging the film and music industries. In 1993, she released her first solo album, Ja nemam drugi dom (“I Have No Other Home”), followed by Uđi slobodno (“Come in Freely”) in 2008, which brought her great success. She dedicated her private life to her family, marrying former tennis player Slobodan Živojinović in 1991, with whom she has two sons.
