German dance and entertainment orchestra directed by Max Greger. Max Greger (April 2, 1926 – August 15, 2015) was a celebrated German jazz musician, saxophonist, and big band leader born in Munich. Although originally intended to take over his parents' butchery business, his musical path began at age ten when he received an accordion. He later studied clarinet and saxophone at the Munich Conservatory. Drafted into service at the end of World War II, Greger began playing in American officers' casinos shortly after the war ended, establishing himself alongside Hugo Strasser as a pioneer of the post-war German swing and jazz scene. Greger founded his first ensemble in 1948. He gained recognition by performing with jazz legends such as Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. A major career breakthrough occurred in 1959 when his band became the first Western group in 35 years to tour the Soviet Union. From 1963 to 1977, Greger held a fixed contract with the German broadcaster ZDF. He became a staple of German television, providing music for major live shows. His composition "Up to Date" is still used today as the theme song for the ZDF sports program Das aktuelle Sportstudio. Later Years and Legacy Greger remained active throughout his life, celebrating his 60th birthday with a "Super-Band" of famous colleagues and touring Germany until shortly before his death. He frequently performed with his son, Max Greger Jr., and his grandson. Max Greger died of cancer in Munich on August 15, 2015, at the age of 89. He left behind a vast musical legacy, including over 150 records and approximately 3,000 produced musical tracks ranging from Schlager to Jazz.
